The
first task of our committees in July was to
formulate objectives and draw up a budget.
With these tasks executed successfully, we
were ready to tackle the year.
Service
projects that were completed successfully
were a Careers Day at Fundinjobo High School,
a day visit to the Kruger National Park for
White River senior citizens, a week’s
holiday for senior citizens at the Rotary
Badplaas resort, participation in the Rotary
Family Health Days and judging at the primary
school speech competition. Food was donated
to the Mshadza Special Care Centre (better
known as the Masoyi centre) by a local supermarket
while a few Rotarians rolled up their sleeves
and did some maintenance to the centre’s
playground on Mandela Day. Our club also contributed
to the Anglican Church’s feeding scheme
for destitute families. Christmas parties
were held at seven localities where most of
the kids were orphans. Each received a Christmas
gift donated by the children of Upland s Prep
and their families.
The
Youth Committee was very active with their
inputs in Interact clubs, Youth Exchange (sending
six young ladies overseas), and preparation
for RYLA.
It
wasn’t all work and no play –
we enjoyed a Sunday musical recital on the
Hyson’s lawn, bringing in some funds
for The Rotary Foundation. A roving “Christmas
in August” lunch was enjoyed by members,
as was a picnic at the Bundu Estate.
We
listened to some very interesting presentations
at our meetings, including one on the memorable
experiences of wildlife photographer Lex Hes
and another on the dreaded listeriosis disease
by renowned local attorney Richard Spoor.
Various members had interesting stories to
tell us during “Member Speaker”
evenings.
Memorable
occasions were the visit by the DG couple,
Maurice and Chrisna Stander and recognition
of Penny Boden’s community service with
a Paul Harris Fellowship. Two new members
were inducted.
The
Anns continued to support us, baking dozens
of muffins for the Careers Day and providing
food for the seniors on the Kruger Park trip.
All in all a successful half year!
