Polio
ABOUT POLIO
Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a highly contagious, paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five years. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated. For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
SYMPTOMS OF POLIO
Non-Paralytic Polio –
This does not cause paralysis and usually causes flu like symptoms such as: sore throat, fever, headache, vomiting, weakness and fatigue, back pain, neck pain or stiffness, meningitis, muscle tenderness or weakness.
Paralytic Polio –
Loss of reflexes, severe muscle weakness and pain, floppy and loose limbs (flaccid paralysis).
WHY IS POLIO STILL RELEVANT?
Africa was declared Wild Virus Polio Free in August 2020. In November 2021 a case was detected in Malawi. As of 4 October 2022, 7 cases of wild polio virus infection have been recorded in Mozambique, all paralytic cases! Mozambique falls within the Rotary Districts 9400 and 9210.
New York reported a paralytic case of a young adult male. The UK has a vaccination drive for children from 1-9 years of age after detecting the virus in an environmental waste-water sample.
All reported cases are in unvaccinated people. Polio is one road trip away from us, and our children and young adults who have not been vaccinated are at risk!

How Rotary Club of White River is Helping
POLIO PIG
The Rotary Club of White River has been running a fundraiser for Polio for many years. We run a polio pig for ‘Happy Rands’ where members give money in weekly. Heidi was our 2021-2022 Polio pig. On 20 August she got “slaughtered” by surgeon Past President Hans, who had a small injury. She raised R7606. This money is contributed by members towards the pig as happy rands during our meetings. Our new Polio pig for 2022-2023 is Cleopatra. We are hoping her belly becomes just as full for this year. All money raised is donated to the Rotary Polio fund where Bill Gates matches $2 to every $1 raised.
